Following the success of its first International equine competition – the 2010 European Pony Championships; Bishop Burton College is set to host its second International – a CPEDI 1*/2*/YJ which will see Para Dressage riders from across the globe descend on the College – many for their first taste of competing at this level.
The event will run at the College from 22nd – 24th July and will be the first ever International dressage competition to be held in Yorkshire .
The Competition, which started as a Junior Para Dressage event in 2006, was previously held in Somerset but this year will be held in East Yorkshire , attracting some of the world’s most talented Para Equestrian athletes to the area.
A spokesperson for British Dressage explained: “It’s a vital competition in terms of the development for our younger riders and those looking to be on teams in the future – for many, it’s their first taste of international competition.
“British riders like Sophie Christiansen, Sophie Wells and Emma Sheardown have all been involved in the past and are now World and Olympic medallists.”
Senior Para Dressage rider Emma Sheardown has risen through the ranks
and with Purdy's Dream is the current Freestyle World Champion
World Class riders who will be competing at the event include Alex McNamara, Georgia Wilson and Natasha Adkinson of Bawtry, South Yorkshire .
Other local riders who have already secured their entries include Amy Franks (Shipley, W Yorkshire), Heather Bennett (Goole) and Fiona Maynard from York .
Bishop Burton’s equine director Kim Knightley is looking forward to hosting yet another high-profile competition.
She said: "We were delighted to be chosen as the venue for this prestigious event and we are looking forward to hosting and supporting these riders as they embark on their International careers.
"It's fantastic that we are able, yet again, to utilise our fantastic facilities here at Bishop Burton and welcome more talented athletes from across the World, to East Yorkshire .
“It promises to be a great competition which again puts Yorkshire firmly in the sporting spotlight."
Amanda Bond, chief executive of British Dressage is delighted the competition is moving North to Bishop Burton College .
“Having hosted the FEI European Pony Championships I know Bishop Burton will run this new show with the same efficiency, flair and great hospitality.
“We are lucky to have such a wonderful venue to host an additional international Para Dressage show in Great Britain . With a growing number of athletes in the sport, a quality event at this level is vital to ensure the riders get international experience in a supportive environment.
“For some of the younger athletes, this could be their first international show, so the excitement at the event will be great. This is an opportunity for visitors to the event to see athletes take their first step on their way to becoming future Paralympic champions.”
